What this scam looks like
Craigslist, OfferUp, Mercari-adjacent local deals, and similar platforms attract deposit scams, bait-and-switch listings, fake payment screenshots, and sometimes dangerous meetup setups. Patterns overlap with Facebook Marketplace but often move faster to phone/text.
How it works
- 1
Listing or reply that feels perfect. Price too low, or buyer too eager.
- 2
Move to private channel. They want email/text only and avoid platform trail.
- 3
Ask for trust first. Deposit, gift cards, “hold fee,” or a screenshot “proving” payment.
- 4
Extract. Money gone, item gone, or you arrive to a switched/broken item — or worse, an unsafe location.
Common variants
1. Deposit to hold the item
Seller (or buyer) demands money before meetup. Legitimate local sales do not need advance deposits from strangers.
2. Fake payment screenshot
They show Venmo/Cash App “sent” and grab the item before you confirm funds in your app.
3. Bait listing / switch
Photos of a premium item; the real item is damaged, empty box, or different model.
4. Overpayment shipping deals
Same check/wire pattern as other marketplaces — especially for furniture, phones, and bikes.
5. Unsafe meetup setups
Isolated locations, pressure to come alone, or “come inside to see it.” Prioritize public, well-lit places; many police stations offer safe exchange zones.
No deposit. No gift cards. No “payment screenshot.” If the person will not do a simple public cash/app-confirmed exchange, walk away.
Red flags
- Prices far below market without a clear reason
- Broken English scripts reused across many listings
- Refusal to video-call or show the item live
- Payment methods that are hard to reverse only when you are sending money
- Meetup changes to a more isolated spot at the last minute
If you are being targeted
Stop sending money. Insist on public exchange. If you feel unsafe, leave. Report the listing/user in-app.
If you already lost money or the item
- Contact your payment provider/bank immediately.
- Report in-app and to local police for theft/fraud.
- File at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Warn others with facts (no personal data of yours).
How to protect yourself
- Use platform messaging until meetup details are set.
- Bring a friend; tell someone where you are going.
- Test electronics on the spot; check serials when relevant.
- For vehicles, use the dedicated vehicle sale scams checklist.
- Verify unfamiliar “shipping” or “notary” businesses in ScanBeyond’s trusted directory.
FAQ
Is Cash App safe for Craigslist?
Only if you confirm the payment in your own app before handing over the item — and you accept that person-to-person payments can be hard to reverse. Prefer meeting at a bank or using methods with clearer records for expensive items.
Should I ever ship a Craigslist item?
Local pickup is far safer. Shipping for strangers recreates overpayment and fake-label fraud.
